Many years ago I wondered how involved God wanted to be in my life. I knew that He loved me so much that He sent His Son Jesus to come and die in my place for my sins, but did the everyday events of my life interest Him enough to become involved with them at their lowest level? Did He care about what I thought or how I felt on any given day, or had He dealt with my sin problem and now it was up to me to try to stay out of trouble until I died. I knew I was going to heaven, but was I passing the time and trying to be good or was there more to it? I really wasn’t sure.
As I got older, studied my Bible, and saw more of life, I came to the conclusion that life was going to be a bumpy ride if God had done His part and had left me to figure out the rest on my own. Every day brings its own triumphs and its own challenges. As I looked to the Bible for answers, I began to understand that God desired to be involved in my life as much as I would allow Him to be. He wasn’t interested in being just a “Get Out of Hell” card, He was interested in being my Heavenly Father, not just my sponsor into eternity. He was there from my beginning and will be with me, period. That was a huge relief to me.
The beauty of this is that I don’t have some exclusive arrangement with God that isn’t available to the general public. God isn’t a respecter of persons. He wants to be intimately involved in your life. He’s not watching over you like a parole officer. He wants to watch over you and help you as a loving parent would.
Think about that for a second. The God of Creation wants to watch over you as a loving parent. A parent who is interested in the highs and lows of your life, and He’s not interested in this for mere informational purposes; He wants to be there to lend a helping hand and be a shoulder to cry on.
So how detailed is God about you and me?
Jesus talked of this in Matthew 10:29-30:
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
The first time I saw that scripture it amazed me. The very hairs on my head are numbered. He pays attention to them. God has taken a full inventory of me. As I near fifty years of age, I’ve noticed that my hair inventory has been slowly reducing in number. Each time one ends up in my comb, I envision some tracking sign up in heaven with my name on it, and the number of my counted hairs on it reducing by one. Although it still bugs me, I’ve decided as long as it is being tabulated by simple subtraction and not division I can live with it.
In Psalm 139:13-18 David speaks of how intricately God was involved in his formation from the moment of conception. In His description God isn’t sitting on a throne in some distant place, observing with a passing interest. David says in verse 13:
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
God made the delicate parts of the body and knit them together in the mother’s womb. God made and knit. Those words describe a hands-on approach to David’s life in the most formative stages of his existence. Beyond that, he goes on to say in verse 17:
17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!
Read that a few times and let it sink in. The thoughts God had for David couldn’t be numbered. The thoughts He has for you and me outnumber the grains of sand. The God of the universe moved to form you in your mother’s womb and has had innumerable thoughts about you. That is mind boggling. Does that make you wonder why He is this way about you?
You’re Captivating to God
I didn’t start out as the byproduct of a couple’s romantic interlude, and neither did you. Those are just the circumstances of how we got to this place we now call home.
This really all started in the past. There was a point in time where God had a thought that He pondered upon. That thought became a point of interest with Him so much that as He pondered on it – the thought developed into an idea. As God pondered on that idea, He began to see many facets to it that inspired Him. This idea drew His interest to the point that He became captivated with its possibilities. It was no longer enough to merely entertain the idea.
It became so captivating to God that He desired for it to have a form, a representation that He could freely interact with and enjoy. As He lovingly formed the shell that would encase His captivating idea, He was willing to breathe His own breath into it to bring it to its own conscious state. He so desired to interact with it, to relate to it and to see it fulfill all that He had envisioned it to accomplish.
He then looked down the corridors of time to find the place that He would most need this captivating thought to become live and active in. This thought that had become an idea also had a plan and a destiny in the mind of God, and He would place it at the exact time and place He knew it would have the desired impact.
God looked through every moment of every day that it would exist, and He lovingly placed His grace in those areas where they would be needed. He carefully moved from event to event and appointed His presence and His power to be ready for use in each needed situation. Then He stepped back and reached His own hand into the appointed time for this captivating idea to come into the realm of man, where He breathed His own breath into the small form and watched it grow until it came forth….
That thought that became a captivating idea in the mind of God…
That idea that had excited Him so much He had to bring it into its own form that He could interact with and relate to, was born.
It was you.
Those innumerable thoughts that God had for you began when He first thought of you, pondered about you, became enthralled with you, planned you, provided His grace for you, and breathed His life into you. You aren’t an afterthought. The thought of you captivated God, and He acted to bring you to a place where He could interact and relate to you. That feeling He had about you never passed.
You still captivate God.
We are each unique, treasured ideas that captivated God to the point of creating us so that He could interact with us. Each captivating idea is so precious to God. He thinks of it and cares for it. He thinks of you and me and cares for us.
Psalm 139 paints a beautiful picture of God’s detailed involvement in all the facets of who we are, from His initial creative thoughts of us through our conception and forming in our mother’s womb, to the purpose He gave us to fulfill in our lives. God didn’t mass produce your model and place them on the Earth. You are a unique creation of God Almighty, one He loves and values greatly – so much that He gave a part of Himself in the person of His Son so that He could have an intimate relationship with you.
Never doubt it, never forget it.
